UCLA Tech + Innovation Present a Conversation with Facebook’s Ellen Silver

UCLA IS Professor Sarah T. Roberts explores online moderation and other social media issues with FB’s vice president of operations, May 10.

A UCLA Tech Talk featuring Sarah T. Roberts, assistant professor of information studies, and Ellen Silver, vice president of operations for Facebook, will take place on Thursday, May 10 at 7 p.m. in Korn Convocation Hall at UCLA. This event is presented by UCLA Tech + Innovation.

Professor Roberts is a scholar of various social media topics including IT infrastructure and planning, digital economy, and internet governance and society. She has spent nearly a decade researching the commercial content moderation workforce across the globe, and delineates its occupational – and little-known – hazards upon workers’ psychological and emotional health.

Last December, Roberts hosted a two-day symposium at UCLA on“All Things in Moderation: The People, Practices and Politics of Online Content Review – Human and Machine,” which provided a forum for the multiple challenges to content moderation, from diverse perspectives among scholars, students, journalists, policy makers and content moderation workers.

Recently, Roberts appeared in and served as a consultant on “The Cleaners,” a documentary on the commercial content moderation workforce. The film premiered at Sundance earlier this year, presented by Roberts and the documentary’s co-directors Hans Block and Moritz Riesewieck.

Korn Convocation Hall is located on the UCLA campus in the Anderson School of Management, 110 Westwood Plaza, Los Angeles, CA 90095. Tickets are required for admission. General admission is $12; tickets are free for UCLA students. Capacity is very limited.
