Ramesh Srinivasan: Social Media’s Impact on Political Choices

UCLA IS professor discusses use of social media by Trump administration, Facebook's role in public journalism.

Ramesh Srinivasan, UCLA associate professor of information studies, discussed how social media research is used by the Trump administration to impact how Americans get their news and their exposure to “fake news” on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” today.

“We’ve had a major transformation in how Americans receive their news,” said Srinivasan, who recently published the book, “Whose Global Village? Rethinking How Technology Shapes Our World.” “If you can actually manipulate the way information is shared… by gathering data on users so that you can target them with various posts and ads, then you can actually impact their potential voting behavior as well as their sentiments.”
